What to Wear for Fall Family Photos

A photographer's style guide

My family, and the outfit planning that inspired this guide.

Family · Session guide

I created this guide after getting frustrated shopping for my own family's photo outfits. If you're looking for fall family outfit ideas, the examples and color palettes below can help take some of the stress out of choosing clothes for everyone.

At a glance

Choose a few coordinating colors, match the level of formality, and check your clothes against the setting. Comfort matters when you sit, walk, and move, so choose clothes everyone will enjoy wearing.

Start with color, contrast, and comfort

Choose clothes that share a few colors and a similar level of formality. Check how the group will look against the background before buying anything new.

Coordinate, do not match

Start with one patterned piece, often a dress, and pull colors from it for the rest of the family. Repeat colors subtly rather than putting everyone in identical shirts.

Balance light and dark

Mix a few lighter pieces with medium and darker tones. Cream can brighten a group wearing navy, olive and burgundy, especially in shaded woods.

Photographer's note: A color palette can look perfect on a bed and disappear in a photograph. Always picture your outfits against the actual location.

Casual and formal fall family photo outfit ideas

These two illustrative outfit boards show how the same family can create different looks while keeping a cohesive palette. The outfits are examples, not photographs from an actual client session.

Look 01 / Relaxed and layered

Casual fall outfits

Mom: Burgundy floral dress and brown boots.
Dad: Olive quilted vest, subtle plaid shirt and dark jeans.
Son: Navy quarter-zip, collared shirt and tan chinos.
Daughters: Cream sweaters with olive and rust skirts. The rust skirt sits beside Dad's olive vest.

Why it works: Knitwear and layering bring texture. Cream lifts the darker tones, and rust adds a small dose of fall color.

Look 02 / Dressy fall outfits

Dressy fall outfits

Mom: Solid plum midi dress and brown ankle boots.
Dad: Navy blazer, light blue button-down and navy trousers.
Son: Light blue button-down and navy trousers.
Daughters: Ivory floral dress; dusty blue dress with a camel cardigan.

Why it works: Plum adds depth beside the navy and blue. Ivory and camel lighten the group, while matte fabrics and ankle boots keep the outfits suited to an outdoor family session.

Styling examples are digitally generated visual references. Your actual family session will be photographed on location.

Five fall family photo color palettes

These are starting points, not strict uniforms. Choose the palette that works with your background and your family's personal style. Each swatch includes a hex color for planning outfits or sharing a mood board.

Burgundy#7D293F
Navy#203752
Ivory#F0E7D8
Olive#626A4A

Where to wear: Wooded trails and golden fall foliage.

Classic Fall

Burgundy brings warmth, ivory brightens faces, and navy separates the family from orange leaves. Use olive as an accent when the background is green.

Dusty blue#8298AA
Camel#B99165
Cream#F3EBDD
Chocolate#5A3C2F

Where to wear: Open fields, golden grasses, or waterfront paths.

Golden Field

Blue contrasts with golden grass. Add cream to prevent the wardrobe from blending into a pale field.

Rust#B45D39
Navy#273B55
Taupe#AA9B89
Ivory#F1E8D8

Where to wear: Green woods and rustic fences before the leaves turn.

Early Fall Woods

Rust stands out against green trees. Use less rust when the trees have turned orange.

Sage#9AA48B
Oatmeal#D9CCB6
Soft blue#A7BBC8
Tan#B58C69

Where to wear: Gardens, waterfront settings, and shaded paths.

Soft and Natural

A relaxed palette for softer scenes. Add a darker piece if everyone is too close in value.

Plum#653D58
Champagne#E6D6B9
Navy#223550
Warm gray#A69C95

Where to wear: Historic buildings, brick streets, and urban settings.

Dressy Autumn

A dressier alternative to red and green. Ideal with a blazer and flowing dress.

Keep the colors distributed. Avoid putting every dark color on one side of the family and every light color on the other. Spread the palette across the group for balance.

Oops, we messed this up last year. I should have swapped my daughters’ positions. That’s what happens when we take our photos from a tripod.

Patterns, layers and textures that photograph well

Begin with one noticeable print, such as a small floral dress or subtle plaid shirt. Surround it with solids and texture. Two understated patterns can work if they share colors and do not compete.

Usually works well

  • Small, muted florals
  • Subtle plaid and low-contrast stripes
  • Cable-knit sweaters and corduroy
  • Quilted vests and tailored blazers
  • Soft, flowing fabrics

Use with care

  • Large logos and slogans
  • Neon or highly saturated colors
  • Multiple bold prints
  • Very fine repetitive patterns that may create moiré
  • Clothes that constantly need adjusting

Texture creates depth without adding more colors. A knit sweater, flowing dress, tailored shirt and corduroy skirt can all share the same palette while looking distinct.

What should kids and teenagers wear?

Give teenagers a palette and a few boundaries, then let them choose clothes they like wearing. One daughter can wear a floral dress while another wears a sweater and skirt. They do not need identical outfits. For boys, a button-down, chinos or a quarter-zip can be dressed up or down.

Make sure everyone can sit, walk and move comfortably. Choose footwear that fits the terrain. Brown leather shoes, neutral ankle boots, loafers and understated sneakers can all work, provided they fit the formality of the outfits.

What not to wear for fall family pictures

Avoid outfits that dominate the photograph or disappear into the background. Large logos, neon colors, too many competing patterns and ill-fitting clothing can distract from expressions. Bright white is not forbidden, but cream and ivory often look softer. All-black outfits can lose detail in dark woods.

You do not need to buy everything new. Well-fitting pieces from your own closets can work beautifully when styled together.

The fall family photo outfit checklist

Lay out every complete outfit side by side, including shoes and accessories, and take a quick phone picture of the whole group of clothes.

  • Choose two or three coordinating colors plus neutrals.
  • Balance light, medium and dark tones.
  • Use one main print and keep the rest understated.
  • Check contrast against the actual background.
  • Keep the level of formality consistent.
  • Try on the complete outfits, including shoes.
  • Make sure everyone can walk, sit and move comfortably.
  • Steam or iron clothing and empty bulky pockets.
  • Ask whether everyone feels like themselves.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best colors for fall family photos?

Navy, burgundy, dusty blue, cream, olive, camel and muted rust are versatile choices. Select the exact mix based on the background and lighting.

Should everyone wear the same color?

No. Coordinating two or three colors with neutrals usually looks more natural than identical outfits.

Can you wear blue for fall family pictures?

Yes. Navy and dusty blue contrast especially well with orange and golden leaves and pair easily with cream, camel and burgundy.

Is burgundy a good color for fall photos?

Yes. Burgundy works beautifully with green and golden scenery. Against red foliage, add blue or cream for contrast.

Can you wear white or black?

Both can work. Ivory often feels softer than stark white, while navy or charcoal may preserve more visible detail than black in dark woods.

Are jeans okay for fall family photos?

Yes. Clean, well-fitting dark or medium-wash jeans are a strong option for casual sessions.

How many patterns should a family wear?

One noticeable pattern is a reliable starting point. Add a second subtle pattern only if the scale and colors work together.

How do you avoid a Christmas look?

Use burgundy instead of bright red and muted olive instead of vivid green. Break them up with cream, navy and tan.

When is the best time for fall foliage photos?

The timing varies by weather and location. Check current local foliage reports before choosing a date around fall color.
